The answer matters. A hospital isn’t simply a building with an emergency room and operating rooms. The services available, the specialists on staff, and the level of emergency care can make a significant difference depending on your medical needs. That’s why I believe it’s important for Medicare beneficiaries in Pace, Milton, Pensacola, Gulf Breeze, Jay, and the surrounding communities to become familiar with the hospitals serving our area before an emergency happens.
This article begins a new series highlighting hospitals throughout Northwest Florida, so you can better understand the services they provide and how they may fit into your healthcare decisions. We’re starting with Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola.
An Overview of Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola
Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola has served Northwest Florida for more than a century and has grown into one of the region’s largest healthcare providers. Today, the hospital is a 547-bed, full-service acute care hospital that serves patients from Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, and neighboring counties, as well as portions of South Alabama. It offers around-the-clock emergency care and a broad range of specialty medical and surgical services.

Because of these capabilities, Ascension Sacred Heart frequently receives patients transferred from smaller hospitals throughout the Florida Panhandle when advanced specialty care is needed.
What Does “Level I Trauma Center” Mean?
Many people see the words Level I Trauma Center but aren’t sure what they actually mean. It’s the highest designation available for trauma care, meaning the hospital has specialists, surgeons, operating rooms, imaging, blood bank services, and critical care teams immediately available 24 hours a day for patients with severe injuries, such as serious automobile accidents, multiple traumatic injuries, severe head injuries, major internal bleeding, complex fractures, penetrating injuries, and other life-threatening emergencies.
Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola was designated a Level I Trauma Center by the Florida Department of Health in 2024, joining an elite group of only 11 hospitals statewide with that designation. It’s also the only hospital in the entire country certified as a Level I trauma center for both Florida and Alabama. Because it’s the only Level I Trauma Center in Northwest Florida, patients experiencing major trauma are often transported there by ambulance or helicopter from surrounding communities.
Emergency Services Available 24 Hours a Day
Not every emergency requires the same level of care. Ascension Sacred Heart’s Emergency Department is designed to evaluate and treat both adults and children with serious illnesses and injuries, including chest pain, heart attacks, stroke symptoms, major injuries, broken bones, severe infections, difficulty breathing, serious allergic reactions, seizures, and head injuries. Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of hospitalization among Medicare beneficiaries. Studer Family Children’s Hospital
While many of my clients are Medicare beneficiaries, grandparents often ask where their children and grandchildren should seek pediatric specialty care. Located on the Sacred Heart campus, the Studer Family Children’s Hospital is the region’s only children’s hospital and includes Northwest Florida’s only Pediatric Trauma Center. It provides pediatric emergency care, pediatric intensive care, a Level III neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric surgery, and numerous pediatric specialty services. Even though Medicare generally serves older adults, many families appreciate having specialized pediatric services available close to home.
Comprehensive Cancer Care
Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, and many patients want to know whether they can receive most of their care close to home. Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola offers comprehensive oncology services through its Cancer Center, bringing together specialists from multiple disciplines to coordinate treatment plans. However, if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, there may be additional considerations, such as whether the hospital is in your plan’s network, whether your specialists participate in the same network, prior authorization requirements for certain non-emergency services, rules regarding post-acute rehabilitation or skilled nursing care, and referral requirements for specialty care.
